Activities
The
hiking in Juneau is great! Over the years it has been our family's primary
outdoor activity. You can start just outside of your suite; we are located in a
lovely cove with an island that is accessible for exploring at low tide. The
cove has many waterfowl, eagles, and cetaceans. Within a few hundred yards
is the Auke Bay Recreational Area that contains an easy, short, hiking trail
along the shoreline.
There are numbers of other trails throughout the Juneau area. Two of our favorites are near the
Mendenhall Glacier, located about 5 miles from our home. While there, stop by
the visitor's center where you can speak to a
naturalist and read various displays.
We highly recommend the Mt Robert's tram, particularly on a nice day and
combined with a hike in alpine country. Most of us locals use the
tram each year, but we are more inclined to hike up and take the tram down. It
may look imposing, but the ride is short (4 minutes) and awesome.
We also recommend that you take in a salmon bake. There is one
in town and one up the Taku River that is combined with a plane ride. The plane
ride is a nice way to see the country and some glaciers. Helicopter
flightseeing trips are another popular option
for glacier viewing, and some of them even land on the glacier.
Sportfishing is excellent, particularly in late spring and
after mid-July. Or, you can go whale-watching, take a raft down the Mendenhall
River, stop by the DIPAC salmon hatchery and learn about the wonderful Pacific
salmon, or take an sightseeing cruise to Tracy Arm, Skagway, or Gustavus.
